About the artist:

     Satu Viitanen was raised in Finland and her childhood years were consumed with a passion for creating childlike works in almost any medium. She began her career in the fashion industry in the 1970's which allowed her to travel widely in Scandinavia and Europe.

     She immigrated to the United States in 1979 and became involved with graphic arts including founding a design company, called Lapland Toy, specializing in educational wooden toys for toddlers. She had always dreamed, however, of following a purely creative path. “Finally, I began the earnest pursuit of art in 1993 and began painting with acrylic mediums. At that time, I wanted to re-invoke my childhood inspirations as well as the countless inspiring visions absorbed during my years of travel abroad.”

     Her artistic career began to take off in 1996 when she was accepted to her first juried art show, followed by invitations to galleries from San Francisco, Los Gatos, Carmel, San Luis Obispo, and Los Angeles.

    Today she mainly create commissioned art works as well as original pieces for exhibition. She continues to display her works in juried art exhibitions as well as in selected galleries and showrooms.

   Satu Viitanen is a recognized artist and has been featured in many publications. She has received numerous awards in competitions for both her paintings as well as for her latest medium, color photographic compositions. 

Work description:

Her painting style largely represents Old World themes, nature themes and architectural elements. 

Her work consists of original large tapestry-canvas wall hangings; free-standing 3-D folding screens that vary from small, tabletop to full-sized, floor-standing designs; works from recent years includes color photographic compositions.
