Satu Viitanen is a native of Finland and traveled extensively in Europe as a young adult before coming to the United States in 1979. Early in her career, she was engaged in graphic arts design creating colorful wooden toys for toddlers as a co-founder of Lapland Toy Company. She devoted herself to the full time pursuit of visual arts in 1993 when she began painting on canvas, paper and wood using acrylic as her medium of choice. Satu first participated in juried art shows in 1996 and has since been invited to display her art in galleries and showrooms in San Francisco, Los Gatos, Carmel, San Luis Obispo and Los Angeles. Her work can also be found in private collections around the world.
In the realm of paintings, her expertise lies in creating large canvas-tapestry wall hangings as well as multi-panel folding screens of various sizes. Satu enjoys creating paintings with the detailed texture and feeling of old-world patina surfaces reminiscent of renaissance Europe, among other themes.
In photography, she seeks to capture nature and architectural elements in a unique and natural light. Satu has won many awards over the last five years for her photography, producing award winning works with her engaging creative perspective.
Satu’s photography is available in various sizes and printed at her studio using highest-quality archival paper and inks as limited-edition prints. Satu also offers her original artwork and selected prints of original paintings in limited-edition Giclée reproductions embellished with hand-painted overlays. Her folding screens are offered through private commissions.
Today, she displays her work in juried Bay Area art exhibitions as well as in selected galleries and other special venues. Satu has received numerous recognitions and awards for her works in both categories of paintings as well as her photographic compositions. One of her photographs, titled ‘Workbench I’, was selected in 2009 by the City of Gilroy for its permanent collection.
"My personal goal has always been to work with a variety of art forms. Today, it brings me true satisfaction that I am able to create a wide range of paintings as well as color photographic compositions.”
